Veterans Day is a time to honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It is a day of reflection, gratitude, and recognition of the sacrifices made to protect our freedoms. At YES Communities, we are proud to support and celebrate our veteran residents, team members, and neighbors across the country.
This Veterans Day, Antelope Ridge proudly honors one of its own, Earl, a medically retired Marine Corps veteran and YES Communities resident whose story of resilience and dedication continues to inspire our community.
Earl enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at just 17 years old. Earl spent nearly three years on active duty before a life-altering event changed his path. In 1955, while stationed in Korea, Earl was mistakenly shot by a guard who believed he was an intruder. The bullet caused severe nerve damage to his right arm which led him to spend the eight months in the hospital and more than five years regaining movement in his arm, to his surprise.
During his recovery, Earl pursued his long-time passion for photography, working one-handed for the Colorado Springs Free Press. His determination never wavered. Beyond his military and professional achievements, Earl spent four years chasing the elusive Southern Lights (Aurora Australis), a rare and fleeting natural phenomenon. His dedication to capturing beauty in the world mirrors the strength he showed in overcoming adversity.
When asked what Veterans Day means to him, Earl shared his deep respect for the military and the sacrifices made by so many. “I fly the American flag 24/7,” he said, reflecting on the wounded soldiers he met during his time in recovery and the profound impact they had on his life.
As we reflect on Veterans Day, we honor not only Earl’s story, but the countless lives shaped by service, sacrifice, and strength. Each veteran carries a legacy of resilience that continues to inspire our communities and our nation. Today and every day, we express our deepest gratitude to those who have worn the uniform and stood in defense of our freedoms. Their courage reminds us of the enduring values that unite us, and their contributions will never be forgotten.
